Train the Trainer Application

Thank you for your interest in becoming a certified Sources of Strength trainer. Sources of Strength is an ongoing, strength-based, comprehensive wellness program that focuses on suicide prevention, but also impacts other issues such as substance abuse and violence. This evidence-based program, is based on a relational connections model that uses teams of peer leaders mentored by adult advisors to spread hope, help and strength throughout a social network to change peer social norms about help seeking and encourage students to individually assess and develop strengths in their lives. The Sources of Strength Train the Trainer Program (T4T) offers in-depth and personalized instruction in the Sources of Strength curriculum. As Sources of Strength is a highly-effective, evidence-based program, it must maintain its integrity and program fidelity through careful selection of Sources trainers.

T4T Trainers are expected to:

  • Commit to a three-year training process, including
  • Observing two half-day school trainings
  • Participating in a four day T4T Skills Session training
  • Co-training at least two half-day peer team trainings.
  • Training on his/her own at two to four half-day school trainings during the school year
  • Provide their own transportation to selected schools throughout their geographical region.
  • Commit to providing training in accordance with Sources of Strength protocols in a safe and ethical manner.
  • Maintain open communication with the Sources of Strength national team.

At least two of the six trainings should be a full 3-5 hour peer team training with at least two presented under supervision or fully videotaped and submitted for feedback. The other trainings could be a combination of shorter trainings using some of the Sources of Strength curriculum modules, i.e., present to church youth group, a break-out at a conference, a Boys and Girls Club presentation, etc. Our experience has shown that anything less than six trainings does not allow trainers to obtain the necessary skill level and proficiency.  If you are from a small school system or region that would not provide at least six training opportunities in 12 months it may be more cost effective and reasonable to have an outside certified trainer provide the training portion of the Sources of Strength project rather than develop your own trainer.

Requirements for Eligibility

  • Trainers must be available to participate in and/or conduct up to six trainings throughout a two year process.
  • Trainers must be age 18 or older.
  • Trainers must have previous training experience.
  • Trainers must NOT have experienced the loss of a close family member, friend or acquaintance to suicide within the last two years.
